Fishing Cures is Expanding its Board of Directors

After a very successful charity fishing tournament in Cabo san Lucas, Fishing Cures is adding two new members to its Board of Directors.

About Fishing Cures: As a 501(c)3, non-profit organization, we raise money to support cancer research. Fishing Cures sponsors Tom’s Team, an annual Sportfishing tournament in Cabo san Lucas. We pay no salaries and have minimal overhead. That means the nearly 100% of the money raised is donated. 100% of the net proceeds are donated to Moores UCSD Cancer Center. Established in 1978, Moores Cancer Center is one of just 45 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States, and the only one in the San Diego region. Their unique “bench-to-bedside” approach to cancer research and patient care supports the broadest range of cancer activities in the San Diego region.

logo03-colorAbout Tom’s Team: Tom’s Team is an annual charity fishing tournament held during the first week of October in Cabo san Lucas sponsored. 100% of the net proceeds go to fund leukemia research. Our format is unique. The four-day tournament is held in the fall (when the fishing is topnotch). It is a 7-species format. (Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Striped/White Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado and Wahoo) Billfish are strictly catch-and-release. The tournament participates in a tagging program for Marlin and Sailfish. Teams of one to four anglers are sponsored by either a company or individuals. In addition to soliciting donations, we run a pledge campaign – every team signs up backers – every boat is a winner for charity.

What Makes a Good Fishing Cures Board Member? The present team has gathered because every one of them has had friends or family impacted by this terrible disease. Because of those experiences, we all understand the urgency of finding cures. An ideal new board member will have similar experiences and a determination to make a difference. Each board member has sponsored a team and most have lead those teams. Fishing Cures is about raising money to support cancer research. But we are all bound by another passion as well – Sportfishing. A new board member who shares that passion would fit right in.

Finally, all board members have dedicated themselves to helping others – to making a difference in the lives of people – adults and children – that they will never meet. They have reach out through their extensive networks and solicited donations and pledges. They have helped to publicize Fishing Cures and Tom’s Team. If you share our determination to help fund cancer research, to make a difference in the lives of people who are so desperately in need, to get involved in something bigger than yourself and to join a group of happy warriors, then you may be right for the role.

Board Members Role and Responsibilities: Board members help to oversee the operations of Fishing Cures, participate in media events such as interviews and advise the Chief Executive Officer. They arrange sponsorships for and assemble teams. Most importantly, they participate in the annual fundraising efforts. We accomplish all of this with only one annual face-to-face meeting. All other business is conducted via email and phone calls.
