Don’t waste your life living out other people’s visions of you

Earl R. Smith II. PhD DrSmith@Dr-Smith.com Dr-Smith.com (Read More From My Blog) Like most such observations, the title of this chapter is subject to misunderstanding. I suppose it is inevitable that some readers might take the easy way out and prefer the simpler interpretation. But I’m not writing for those people. The idea in this..

Making a Difference

I always take a few minutes at the end of each day to journal. I have found this time is always well spent. First I re-read the entries from the prior week or so – it helps keep things in perspective – to connect with what some Native Americans call the ‘long view’.

Breaking Out of a Rut

Those of you who fish will understand. For those of you who don’t, a fishing reel pulls in line when you rotate the handle. Without that action, it is just a curiosity on your end of the fishing pole. To help it to fulfill its purpose, you need to take extended and purposeful action.

The Principle of Least Effort: Mentoring The Ready

Earl R Smith II, PhD DrSmith@Dr-Smith.com Dr-Smith.com Read More From My Blog The process of mentoring is different than that of coaching. I describe coaching as ‘teaching you how to do something better than you have been doing it.’ Those of you who pursue the sport of golf may understand what I am saying. If..

Don’t waste your life trying to be someone else.

Earl R. Smith II. PhD DrSmith@Dr-Smith.com Dr-Smith.com (Read More From My Blog) Much of my mentoring work begins with a fairly standard initial session. Walking Together Alone – Searching For the Self

Earl R. Smith II, PhD DrSmith@Dr-Smith.com Dr-Smith.com (Read More From My Blog) There is an important difference between Coaching and Mentoring. Coaching tends to deal with the finishing details while mentoring focuses on foundational questions. I value the work done by Coaches and have done a considerable amount of it myself but, over the years,..

Presence in the Present

Take a minute and think about the present – your present – the time right now that you are living through. It is a most amazing experience – this ‘present’ that is yours and yours alone. It’s not the ‘world’s present’ or ‘humanities’ present’ but yours alone. No other person will ever have the privilege of living through it. It is truly and uniquely yours alone.

In seeking simplicity we do not ignore our lives but what distracts us.

This volume is written as a series of ‘thinking pieces’ that are to serve as points of meditation on important matters. Think of them as rocks leading to the shore. I’ll leave you to figure out what and where the shore is, what the canoe signifies and what’s the reason for the journey. All I..

The Consultant’s Disease

Earl R. Smith II. PhD DrSmith@Dr-Smith.com Dr-Smith.com (Read More From My Blog) I get approached by consultants who want to expand their business. They have been profitably (most often) supporting a small staff for some years. But the ‘bigger’ bug has been whispering in the principal’s ear for some time.

It is wise to step back from our preoccupations & listen to the rhythms of our hearts & minds

Giving Yourself Permission

This might seem like a strange idea at first – giving yourself permission – but, once you think about it some, you will realize that it really gets to the core of how you live – and decide to live – your life. Begin with this simple idea – you are the gatekeeper of your own possibilities – you determine what is possible for you.

Orthodoxy or Optimism?

I was having drinks with a friend a couple of weeks back when the conversation took a strange turn. As a matter of background, I have known him for a couple of decades, considered him a valued friend and someone who thought before he spoke. We were discussing alternative energy and the likely way forward. What set me back was his insistence that there was no future other than through existing technologies.

Running On Empty

I recently took a client who came to me through a good friend. She – his friend – was concerned for him and wanted me to help him if I could. Years ago, they had founded a company together and built it up to the point that another, larger company had decided that they just had to have it. The cash out was very good and both of them took off with their respective families for an extended and well-earned vacation.

These are stories about things that don’t have to happen – things that can be avoided. There is nothing in human experience that makes them unavoidable. These are stories about the great divide between knowing and doing – and about how a trusted coach can help you remake your future.

The Importance of Acting on Good Ideas

I recently came across this in one of my old journals. I remember the feelings that were there when I wrote it. Acting on good ideas is part of personal growth – part of an effort at self-improvement. The mind comes up with these flashes of lightening but it is the body that drives them into action.
